Although MOTOR TABS officially began shipping live product on March 23, 2006, the ideation began many years prior. Sports Engine LLC’s (MOTOR TABS’ parent company) Chief Executive Manager, Greg Sellers, happened upon a tube containing a commercially available, effervescent vitamin tablet. He wondered if he could develop a product for athletes. Sellers, who held a sports marketing position for a leading sports nutrition outfit at the time, envisioned a true sports drink (sodium/potassium/carbohydrate) that would utilize an effervescent tablet delivery system. The simplicity and portability were intriguing, and the premise piqued his interest. He was quite familiar with the sports drink landscape, as he had used many of the leading powders while racing mountain bikes in the ‘90s on the hot, dusty slopes of Southern California. Fortunately for Sellers, his position with that sports nutrition company was eliminated in December of 2003, freeing him up to develop MOTOR TABS on a full-time basis.
In January of 2004, Sellers’ first step was to locate a domestic manufacturing facility. He did and the factory quickly embraced the project, allocating its ultra-talented, four-person product development team to the cause. Members of the MOTOR TABS Cycling team also provided critical feedback that translated into a better product as well. Michellie Jones and Pete Coulson signed on very early, lending a tremendous amount of credibility from the outset. Top athletes in Orange County came onboard, including local celebrities Rich Meeker and Jason Bausch. Many top age-group triathletes, such as Nashville’s Shelby Sheffield, joined the Brand’s stable of professional and amateur athletes who utilized MOTOR TABS in the Brand’s early stages.
A linchpin that fueled the Brand’s development was the seemingly ‘chance’ meeting between Sellers and one of the Company’s investors in July, 2005. The product development aspect was moving forward, but the Company’s initial capitalization had not yet been finalized. Sellers returned to Southern California after a factory visit and the investor – who resides out of state - was vacationing Orange Country. The two met at a coffee shop in San Clemente and reviewed the launch plans for MOTOR TABS. They referred to the seemingly ‘chance’ meeting as Divine Providence. The investor embraced the project and signed on, as he believed in the Brand’s viability. A few months later, MOTOR TABS made its debut at the 2005 edition of Interbike, an international tradeshow for the bicycle industry.
In March, 2006, the first MOTOR TABS order shipped to Edge Cyclesports in Laguna Hills, CA. Since then the Brand has been making steady progress around the globe, with 12 international distributors, two domestic distributors, hundreds of retailers and thousands of consumers participating in all types of sports!
